Can Someone with Dementia Still Recognise Family?

Recognition is not all-or-nothing. A person may struggle with a name or relationship while still responding to a familiar voice, manner, touch, song or sense of safety.

Why recognition can vary

Dementia can affect memory, language and visual processing in different ways. Tiredness, poor lighting, hearing loss, anxiety or an unfamiliar setting can add to the difficulty. Ability may also fluctuate during the day.

Make arrival gentler

Approach from the front, say who you are naturally and give the person time. Avoid asking 'Do you know who I am?' because it can feel like a test.

  • Try: 'Hello Dad, it's Anna. I've brought us some tea'
  • Wear something familiar
  • Use photographs with simple captions
  • Share music or an activity instead of relying on conversation

Connection still counts

If the person uses the wrong name, you can respond to the warmth or need behind it. A comfortable visit is valuable even if the factual memory does not last.
